The Simpsons Movie may have taken over $500m at the box office, but creator Matt Groening has revealed it "almost killed" the original sitcom.
Known for its similarities to Stephen King's Under the Dome, Homer's pet Spider-Pig and a Tom Hanks cameo, the animated feature film was well received by fans around the world – so what does Groening mean?

Making a pit stop at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Groening discussed how the movie's use of team resources could've seen the beloved sitcom crumble.
Via NME, he revealed: "This is a true answer. The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us.
"We didn't have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie."
He then joked: "That was in 2007. We're almost recovered, almost."

Although a sequel to the 2007 movie was confirmed last summer, the Disenchantment creator remained tight-lipped on the subject.
In reference to Disney's merger with Fox earlier this year, Groening noted: "No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days. I think Disney wants something for its money."
