Sir Ed Davey bounces into final week of campaign with most bizarre stunt yet

Sir Ed Davey bounced into the final week of campaigning ahead of the General Election with his most bizarre stunt yet.

The Liberal Democrat leader took part in a bungee jump at Eastbourne Borough Football Club today as he urged voters to take a similar “leap of faith” and back the Liberal Democrats on Thursday.

Sir Ed sought a General Election poll bounce for his party by flinging himself off a crane platform while shouting: “Do something you’ve never done before – vote Liberal Democrat.”

One onlooker at the event could be heard saying “Is there anything he won’t do?” – a reference to Sir Ed’s stunt-laden campaign which has also included paddleboarding and rollercoaster rides.

Sir Ed was seen smiling after the jump as his harness was removed.

Speaking ahead of polling day, Sir Ed said: “To get the change our country needs this week and beat the Conservatives in scores of seats, I am asking people to take a leap of faith and vote for the Liberal Democrats.

“A lot of people are on the cusp of doing something they’ve never done before on Thursday and voting for the Liberal Democrats, so I decided to do something I’ve never done before, too.

“Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to fix the NHS and care, end the sewage scandal and tackle the cost-of-living crisis.”

It is one of several visits Sir Ed has paid to Sussex as the Liberal Democrats eye up Tory-held seats including Eastbourne, Lewes and Chichester.

On June 22, he was pecked by chickens as he handed out grain and picked up the animals at Mac’s Farm in Ditchling.

He was joined by Lib Dem candidate James MacCleary as he visited the constituency of Lewes.

On another visit in Eastbourne, shortly after the election was called in May, Sir Ed ate ice creams with the party’s candidate Josh Babarinde while taking a stroll along the seafront.

The Liberal Democrats came second in Eastbourne behind Conservative MP Caroline Ansell by more than 4,000 votes in the last General Election in  2019.
