A taxi driver who has taken almost 30,000 selfies with 20,000 passengers has been given an award by a Chinese record-keeping organisation.
Known locally as the ’smiling cabbie’ (weixiaodige in Chinese), Teng Jiazhi began taking selfies in 2011, and uploads them to popular Chinese social media site Sina Weibo.
He takes selfies with people of all ages, genders, professions, and nationalities and has said his goal is to ‘show the world the passion of Shenyang’, the north-eastern Chinese city where he is from.
He has also been crowned the city’s ‘smiling ambassador’ in 2013 and now holding a record in Shanghai’s Great World Guinness, a record-keeping organisation not connected to the Guinness World Records.
Teng said: ‘Even after I retire, I will continue taking selfies with the people of Shenyang, in the city’s public squares, parks, streets, and alleys.’
Shanghai Great World Guinness was established in 1992 under the authority of the Shanghai Communist Party Youth League.
