Will Smith might have started on the small screen, but he's now a bonafide Hollywood A-lister. He's even going to be the new Genie in Aladdin, for god's sake.

But for any young actors out there hoping to replicate Will's success, he reckons you might have a bit of trouble – as "new movie stars" aren't really a thing anymore, apparently.

Speaking at the film Bright's panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Will admitted that he thinks the world of celebrity has changed, and that "movie stardom" is more elusive than ever.

"I released my first record in '86, so I'm over 30 years in the business. I'm seeing that transition of, essentially, the fans being more and more involved in the creative process," he said.

"In terms of movie stardom, it's a huge difference: You almost can't make new movie stars anymore, right?" (via Vulture).

Adding that the intrigue of "privacy and distance" between stars and their fans has all but disappeared, Will said "this shift into this new world is almost like a friendship with the fans".

"There was a certain amount of privacy and distance that you had from the audience," he noted. "That [limited] amount of access gave you a bigger-than-life kind of thing".

Something that has managed to retain that "bigger-than-life" vibe is Will and Joel Edgerton's new film Bright, which is the most surreal take on a cop caper we think we've ever seen.

Smith stars as a human cop forced into an initiative in which he takes on an orc – yes, orc – partner called Jakoby (Joel Edgerton), the first of his kind on the police force.

Bright, which has been billed as the "real shit", will premiere worldwide on Netflix on December 22. Festive!
