Someone Has Worked Out How Much Yoda Weighs

Too much time on their hands?

A science writer who may or may not have too much time on his hands has worked out one of the great mysteries of Star Wars.

No, not whether Han Solo fired first - how much the diminutive green Jedi Yoda weighs.

Physicist Rhett Alain, writing for Wired, bases his calculation on the scene where Luke Skywalker does a handstand with Yoda sitting on his foot.

Basing his calculations on the distribution of Luke’s mass, and assuming Dagobah to have the same gravity as Earth, he found something rather surprising.

Yoda weighs -43.7 kilos - in other words, the green gnome is using The Force to help Luke by levitating himself, and Luke, upwards.

Alain writes, ‘In fact, even if Luke was doing a handstand without Yoda pulling up, his centre of mass would be 12 cm to the right of his hand. He would tip over.

‘Why is it that Yoda using The Force and not Luke? Luke doesn’t know what he is doing. He couldn’t even lift the X-wing (which happens right after this). He’s just a student."

Alain’s theory is that, ‘‘Yoda was just helping Luke because he wanted him to feel a small sense of accomplishment after his failure in the cave.’
