Clifton shoppers have welcomed a new business which has opened up inside the area's former Wilko store months on from its closure. The branch on Southchurch Drive closed along with Wilko stores in Sherwood and Kimberley on September 19, 2023.

It came after Wilko announced that it was closing all its stores around the country, with many having since been transformed into Poundland or B&M Bargains outlets. Clifton was one of the Nottinghamshire Wilko branches left vacant, but a local businessman has now taken on the site.

Quirdit Khan, 21, lives in Clifton and is the manager of the new store inside the old Wilko which he is calling Home Decor. Mr Khan said: "Business is very good, there are lots of things we sell like the luggage and bedding that people love.

"We do plan to open more shops, it's been a nice business over here in Nottingham so we definitely want open more. We want to expand out from Nottingham.

"We hope for the future we can open more shops in places like London. We have about 5 or 6 members of staff right now and we are looking to hire."

The store sells everything from American candy and makeup to suitcases and garden furniture. Having officially opened on June 18, many Clifton shoppers have welcomed the new business. Shoppers can also expect 'special opening offers' and up to 50 percent off certain items for a limited time only.

Clifton resident Judith Morgan, 56, said: "The shop being open definitely helps the community. It's nice to see an empty shop being used. Some of the stuff's really nice, I'm just trying to work out what's of most use to me."

Pauline Calladine, 65, also from Clifton, said: "It's great having an empty shop be used, it's silly having something here that's empty. Whether it's the right thing for this street I'm unsure yet, I'm still trying to make my mind up."
