I spent an evening with 90 strangers and can't wait to do it again

Making new friends can feel terrifying, especially when you are dumped in a new city miles away from your home.

For me, the thing that made me most anxious about moving to Liverpool was the idea of having to make new friends. 'How do you meet new friends as an adult?', is something I kept asking myself. That was when someone told me about Girls on the Go.

Girls on the Go has taken Instagram by storm, it makes meeting friends a whole lot easier. The group was set up six months ago by Steph, who recently moved to the city from Geneva, her best friend Caitlin, and her boyfriend, Martin. It has since taken off into a whole female power movement, inspiring hundreds of girls, not only in Liverpool but across the country to get out and meet new friends.

For me, I think it is the perfect way for me to get out and experience this amazing city I now call my home.

The group started after Steph graduated university and jumped straight into a remote working job - she found herself not seeing people for sometimes weeks - and quite sad by it - she met up with her best friend Caitlin and set up a beginners running group to help girls feel less isolated.

But running wasn't enough. They set out to tackle isolation for girls in Liverpool with weekly girly events to help people like us, make new friends. Their first group run started with 20 girls and now hundreds of girls turn up each week to take part in activities.

This week, I spent the evening with around 90 girls at one of the group's bracelet-making nights. We met at The Florist on Hardman Street, which is - and I'm going to say it - probably the most stunning bar I have ever seen. The venue is covered in girly flowers from the walls to ceilings and light fittings.

Up The Florist's grand staircase were a bunch of tables where the girls drank cocktails and made bracelets together - chit-chattering about life, making new friends of all ages and backgrounds in life. We talked about ex-boyfriends, careers, family, friends and in general... everything. It weirdly felt like I had known some of these girls for much longer than the 90 minutes I had been there.

I think what I loved most was how diverse the crowd was, I was expecting maybe a group of 20 to 30 students, but I was shocked to find a huge turnout of around 90 women of all ages, young, older and someone even brought their mum. I found the whole thing so wholesome and made me fall in love with the girly movement even more.

I got chatting with so many lovely girls - and I feel like I genuinely have made friends that I plan to meet up with in the future - well, I hope so, I gave them my Instagram. Some of the girls told me how they came to multiple events put on by Girls on the Go, including Steph, 34, who works in finance, she has been coming to Girls on the Go events for a while, and she says it's a good way for her to meet new people in the city.

She said: "I come to meet people. I usually come with my friend Kat, but I'm on my own this week. Lots of people come on their own it is a good way to meet people. I have made lots of new friends here and we meet up outside of this group to do activities - we love the board game nights they're so much fun."

Rachel, 33, and Erin, 24, both students in Chester, had driven to the city for one of the events they spotted advertised on Instagram. Rachel had been before and told me that she loved coming to meet new people and that it was a great way of doing something new, that didn't involve drinking.

They said: "For me, I think it's great to come along and do activities like this. All there is to do these days really is go out and drink but we're not big drinkers so we like coming here. It only cost £6 too - it's much cheaper than a night out."

I couldn't agree more, for £6 you can't go wrong - and to be quite honest I can't wait to meet up with my new friends again. I think groups like these are a fab way for girls like myself, who have just moved to the city to get out and experience new venues, events and meet friends is an excellent idea.

The night was fabulous, I loved bracelet-making and can't wait to go to my next Girls on the Go event.

There is a huge variety of events from activities, creative events, board games nights, book clubs, pilates, yoga and running clubs. They really are making Liverpool a less lonely place for girls.
