Square Enix fleshing out FFXV's narrative

From Digital Spy

Update: Version 1.06 is now available for download and features the Chapter 13, Verse 2 an alternate route where you're accompanied by Gladiolus.

Original story: Square Enix will be rolling out updates to Final Fantasy XV over the coming year which flesh out its narrative and introduce new gameplay elements.

In a blog post on the Square Enix website, the game's director, Hajime Tabata, has given an overview of improvements aimed at improving player experience.

First up is the game's story. Final Fantasy XV has drawn criticism on two fronts since release: character backstories which remain undeveloped, and plot points which remain obscure. Tabata has promised that new scenes will be added to the game which explain the who, what, and why, a little more thoroughly. Specifically mentioned is Ravus, and his reasons for doing those things that we absolutely can't mention for fear of spoilers.

The process will take some time, as the new content will need to be recorded, localised, and tested.

Tabata has also promised gameplay improvements to Chapter 13, which is a more pressing priority for Square Enix than amending the game's narrative.

The possibility of making key characters playable is also discussed in the post, though this would clearly be a more long-term goal. We hope he's referring to the other members of Backstreet Boys, who are automated in the game's current build, in spite of possessing their own skill trees.

God mode, new items, and challenges that appear in real-time (someone's been playing Hitman), are also being considered.

Final Fantasy XV will also be receiving a cluster of DLC as listed below. Three of the packs are named after Noctis' brothers in arms, and will presumably explore their stories in more depth.

  • FFXV Holiday Pack (tentative name)

  • FFXV Booster Pack (tentative name)

  • FFXV Episode Gladiolus (tentative name)

  • FFXV Episode Ignis (tentative name)

  • FFXV Episode Prompto (tentative name)

  • FFXV Expansion Pack: Comrades (tentative name)
