A new convenience store is set to open in a “relatively new build” that has been vacant since construction in 2022. The new store is set to be located at 3 Unity Street in St Philips, across the road from the Gardiner Haskins car park.

The convenience store will also contain a “smart” greengrocer following a “complete refurbishment”. The store will offer a “wide range of groceries, fresh and frozen foods, dairy produce, fresh bread, coffee, sandwiches and a limited selection of alcohol,” according to an application submitted to Bristol City Council.

If approved, the premises licence would allow the business to permit 'off sales' from the shop once it is open, meaning it could sell alcohol for consumption off the premises. The convenience store would be open everyday from 7am to 11pm.

The application was submitted on April 26 by Kamaljeet Singh. The name of the convenience store was not submitted as part of the application.

The application said: “These premises are located at 3 Unity Street, St Philips, just across the road from the Gardiner Haskins car park. This is the ground floor of a relatively new build and has remained empty since construction in 2022.

“This application is to permit off-sales from the premises following a complete refurbishment, to create a smart new grocers and convenience store offering a wide range of groceries, fresh and frozen foods, dairy produce, fresh bread, coffee, sandwiches, and a limited selection of alcohol.”

Kamaljeet Singh applied to open up a “smart” convenience store earlier this year in Clifton. It is set to open at the former Agno Café on Whiteladies Road. Residents and businesses who wish to comment on the licensing application can contact the council with their views before the deadline of Friday, May 24.

The St Philips neighbourhood, near Temple Meads and Old Market, has seen major development in the past few years. Changes have attracted businesses such as Sainsbury's, big-name bakeries like Mokoko and a deli. Even more growth is expected in the area as part of the huge Temple Quarter regeneration, which is set to deliver 10,000 homes in the area around Temple Meads.
