The ITV trivia expert referred to his ex-boyfriend on Tuesday evening’s edition of the show.

Paul, 47, was in the middle of the final chase when he was asked a question about the video game Mario Kart.

Host Bradley Walsh quizzed: “In what well-known racing video game are bananas and turtles thrown?”

Paul hesitated as he searched for the answer, before incorrectly guessing: “Grand Theft Auto,” leading to the team winning the £10,000 prize.

Reflecting on his mistake, The Sinnerman then added: “My ex was obsessed with Mario Kart. He also said I never paid enough attention.

“That proved he’s right!”

After making the comment, viewers expressed their shock over the news, with many praising the Chaser for speaking about his sexuality live on air:

Fellow quiz boffin Anne Hegerty also commented on the revelation, sarcastically tweeting: “Twitter has just discovered that @paulsinha is gay. Well done, Twitter.”

Paul himself referenced the online furore, jokingly writing to his 72.2k followers: “My wife’s gonna kill me.”

The Chase is on ITV1 weekdays at 5pm.
