Star Wars: The Clone Wars returns five years after axe

Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been miraculously resurrected like a certain Jedi master in the most recent instalment of the Skywalker Saga.

Lucasfilm celebrated the beginning of Comic-Con International on Thursday (July 19) by unveiling a trailer announcing the return of the cult classic animated series, which takes place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

The teaser references the untimely demise of the original Clone Wars by describing the show as "a war unfinished… until now", before previewing the exciting story ahead.

Anakin and Obi-wan are still very much on the same page at the helm of the Rebel Alliance, when they're stunned to receive a transmission from someone they'd not seen in years… their old Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.

"Hello master, it's been a while," she tells the shocked Anakin before the scene cuts out.

Original executive producer Dave Filoni will return for 12 all-new episodes to premiere exclusively on Disney's upcoming streaming service, which will also launch a live-action Star Wars series.

Addressing the unwavering fan support that made this revival possible, Filoni said: "Clone Wars was a piece of Star Wars that older fans might have, initially, not taken seriously because it was animated, but that wasn't a barrier for kids. They loved the clones and identified with them.

"Ahsoka gave kids a character that was like them - someone their age that was experiencing life's challenges and learning along the way. Plus, having a new episode each week really allowed us to explore what was going on with the new and legacy characters in a dynamic way, including Anakin and Obi-Wan.

"I think the stories left an indelible impression and, of course, George knew it would. He always knew."

Lucasfilm recently wrapped up fellow animated series Star Wars Rebels with a controversial cliffhanger ending that continues to be debated among fans.
