Steakhouse with 'modern twist' opens in Middlesbrough after 'major investment'

A new restaurant has opened its doors bringing celebrity chefs, fine Italian cuisine and investment to Teesside.

Sorrento Italian Steakhouse has launched on Middlesbrough's Linthorpe Road in the former Acropolis Greek Taverna and is already proving popular with foodies. The restaurant prides itself on being a "traditional steakhouse, with a modern twist" serving up the finest cuts of meat, reimagined sides and a selection of modern dishes.

Owner Suleyman Akar said he has put "major investment" into the property transforming the restaurant into the perfect spot for lunch, a celebratory dinner, or a night out on the town, he says. Mr Akar previously lived in Liverpool where he owned EFES Turkish BBQ, Istanbul Bar & Grill and invested in as number of other restaurants.

The 46-year-old said he came to Middlesbrough for the "opportunity" and said the town has been very supportive. He said: "Life brought me to Middlesbrough as soon as I sold the restaurants. The building was really run down so I had to make a major investment to get it back up and running.

"It was an opportunity. People have been really nice and really supportive sharing us on social media. There's a really good dining culture in Middlesbrough, people really enjoy going out to eat."

Mr Akar said renovation of the property has included new flooring, decoration, extension of the bar, toilets and kitchen and new seats and tables.

The business owner, who is now based in Middlesbrough, said customers can expect top quality food from skilled chefs. "Our chefs have years of experience," he added.

"One of them had their own Italian restaurant at one point and another is from Mexico and has worked with celebrities and in Michelin star restaurants." Mr Akar said he is "thinking" of further expansion into Teesside but stressed "nothing is set in stone".
