Steps band member and current Strictly Come Dancing contestant Faye Tozer admitted on Thursday’s Lorraine that she has ‘an advantage’ on the dance competition show thanks to her professional dance background.

“I do have an advantage in the way that I can pick up routines,” Tozer admitted.

“But the audience will let you know who they want to see. There’s always going to be a few of us who’ve got some sort of experience and I’ve never said that I haven’t, and I’m just so chuffed to do it – it’s amazing,” she said.

Her professional dance partner Giovanni Pernice added that the dances they learn are ‘completely different’ from those performed with her Steps band mates.

“It’s a little bit different than when she’s with Steps. When you dance, it’s completely different. You move your feet on time with technique and there’s a lot to remember,” Pernice said.

Faye Tozer and several of her fellow Strictly contestants, including Lee Ryan (Blue band member) and Ashley Roberts (former Pussycat Dolls member) have come under fire for their professional training dance pasts.

Tozer has adamantly defended her right to be on the show, but has said that she understands the cause for concern.

“I’m from Steps so of course it was going to come up! Essentially it is an audience show and it is the audience that will decide. If you can dance or if you can’t, they decide who they want to see on the telly and they will fall in love with who they fall in love with,” she said in a previous interview.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on BBC One on Saturday.
