Stunning drone footage shows Cardiff Bay 10k on one of the hottest days of the year

Stunning drone footage captured thousands of runners competing in the Cardiff Bay 10k on Sunday on one of the hottest days of the year. The breathtaking footage shot by UAV Aspects shows racers taking in the picturesque course which crosses the barrage from the bay to Penarth.

A challenging race saw temperatures rise well above 20°C as competitors were roared on by a huge crowd that lined the course, while a brass band played at the bay. The route took in all of the bay’s iconic landmarks, starting and finishing at Roald Dahl Plass and passing the Millennium Centre, Mermaid Quay, the Pierhead Building, the Senedd, Porth Teigr and the barrage.

Before the horn sounded at 11am race director Steve Brace told the runners: “Blue skies, blue sea, what more could you want? The conditions are looking good with a nice breeze to keep runners cool today.

"There are 5,000 lined up to tread the streets of Cardiff. Don’t go out too fast. Get that right and you’ll get your race right.” You can see the best pictures from the day and the fastest runners here.

In the men's elite race it was a close contest between teammates Kadar Omar and three-time race winner Omar Ahmed. They crossed the finish line less than a second apart, but it was Ahmed who took top spot with his fourth consecutive victory with a time of 28:47.

At the finish line Ahmed said: “Winning wasn’t easy today. My teammate was very close but I just managed to beat him so I’m very happy and so excited. I’ve run the course four times so I know it very well. Today was a bit windy and hot, but that didn’t stop me.”
