Colorado officials are investigating after a moose attacked a woman who was walking her dog this week.

A cow moose charged at a woman on Wednesday morning, "headbutting and stomping on her several times” while she was walking her leashed dog on the South Saint Vrain Trail north of Ward, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW),

The woman was able to walk to a neighbor’s house, where Boulder County deputies were called to the scene, authorities said. She was then transported to a local hospital.

Her condition was not immediately known on Thursday morning, but her dog had minor injuries, according to CPW.

Wildlife authorities were unable to find the moose but alerted those in the area to a potentially aggressive animal, reported the Associated Press.

The moose encounter was the third such event this year in the county, CPW told the AP.

Last week, three hikers reported a confrontation with a cow moose and its calf near Crags Trail, west of Colorado Springs, according to CPW.

A hiker was trampled by the moose after one of the group’s three dogs began barking at the animal, per CPW. The hiker sustained minor injuries.

“This incident is a reminder of why we warn everyone to respect wildlife and give them their space,” Tim Kroening, CPW’s Area Wildlife Manager for the Pikes Peak region, said in the news release after last week's attack. “We know Colorado residents love their dogs. But understand that moose see dogs as predators and react in defense of themselves and their young.”

In June, a man hiking in Coal Creek Canyon was trampled by a moose after he and his two off-leash dogs startled the animal, according to CPW.

He suffered non-life threatening injuries, the agency said at the time.
