Swansea City's squad depth chart right now hammers home summer transfer priorities

The point's been laboured many times already, but the size of the task facing Swansea City this summer remains no less significant.

Despite the signs of promise under boss Luke Williams towards the end of the season, it was a largely disappointing campaign for the Swans, one that came on the back of what was, in the end, a summer window that missed the mark.

Too many signings simply didn't reach the standard needed, and the club cannot afford a repeat this time around.

A few players have already left. All six of the club's loanees have headed back to their parent clubs, while the likes of Liam Walsh and Przemyslaw Placheta are among the players to have been released. Questions still remain over the future of Jamie Paterson, too, who at the time of writing appears to be no closer to penning a new deal.

The mood around his situation appears reasonably relaxed for now. Paterson is currently on holiday, and with his deal not expiring until the end of next month, there's plenty of time for a breakthrough.

So, with all that in mind, what would Swansea's team be if they were to play a game tomorrow?

In goal, the departure of Carl Rushworth means Andy Fisher is now poised to take the number one jersey, with Williams not exactly blessed with much in the way of alternatives. Nathan Broome is a possible option, but is something of an unknown given he's never played a senior game for the club.

Snapping up another body between the sticks is surely a pressing priority this summer.

In defence, one would imagine two of Nathan Wood, Harry Darling and Ben Cabango would start at centre-back.

There's clearly room for strengthening already, and the need for reinforcements will be all the more pronounced should Wood be sold this summer.

Josh Key and Josh Tymon, are almost certain to be first choice at full-back, with there little in the way of eye-catching alternatives.

Kyle Naughton is admittedly an accomplished back-up option across the back four, but returning loanees Kristian Pedersen and Nathan Tjoe-A-On have struggled to make their mark in south Wales. Sam Parker and Azeem Abdulai could be potential options, but are still largely untested at this level. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton would appear to be the first choice in the double-pivot at the heart of midfield, with veteran Joe Allen the only real competition, although again Abdulai could well be called upon there if needed.

The positions out wide look even lighter. Ronald and Josh Ginnelly are the only real out-and-out wingers in the squad. Aimar Govea has enjoyed a decent breakthrough, but relying on him at this stage of his career would clearly be a gamble. Paterson is a possibility, but might be better suited in a more central role, where he faces competition from Ollie Cooper.

Up front, it's a question of quality rather than quantity. Jerry Yates, Mykola Kuharevich and Liam Cullen netted just 17 goals between them last season, two less than Joel Piroe the season before.

A quality striker is subsequently the highest priority for the Swans right now.

However, the worry is that there is genuinely a case for strengthening almost every position.
