Tear Gas Disperses Protesters in Caracas After Failed Coup

Protests broke out in Caracas on January 21, following the arrest of 27 members of Venezuela’s National Guard involved in what the Venezuelan government said had been a failed coup attempt.

According to government officials cited in local news reports, those behind the attempted uprising stole weapons, kidnapped four other soldiers and went to a National Guard command post in Cotiza, Caracas, where they were met with resistance and apprehended.

The foiled uprising triggered anti-government demonstrations in Caracas, and clashes between police and protesters.
