Tenerife urges UK tourists 'plan accordingly' and issues two-week warning

Tenerife has issued a message to UK tourists who drive ahead of the launch of a major new motorway. The Tenerife Cabildo has announced upcoming traffic diversions on the TF-65 road in Las Chafiras due the first phase of construction of the third lane on the TF-1 motorway.

It affects the section between San Isidro and Las Americas, including the new Oroteanda to Las Chafiras junction. According to the Department of Roads, the changes are necessary to carry out initial roadworks for the new access ramps leading to the Chafiras overpass.

The right-hand lane of the TF-65 heading towards San Miguel will be temporarily closed. This closure extends from the El Camello roundabout (new junction) to the northern roundabout of the Chafiras junction this week with the installation of horizontal and vertical signage and barriers.

Subsequent work will see the introduction of machinery on roads to complete the revamp. This phase of construction work is expected to last two weeks, with an anticipated completion date of June 17 at 6pm, when normal traffic conditions should resume, they say.

Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and anticipate possible delays during this period. The Tenerife Cabildo appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as they work to improve the island's road infrastructure.

The Spanish government gave the Canary Islands a budget of 1.6 billion euros - or £1.3 billion - to improve Tenerife’s roads and construct a third lane in both directions. Construction is aimed at increasing the capacity of the island’s traffic as well as improving safety.

The TF-1 motorway runs a whopping 100km from the capital Santa Cruz in the north to Adeje with its major tourist resorts Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas in the south of the island, and continues to Santiago del Teide in the west.
