Terry breaks the 'Great British Bake Off' audience with tearful farewell

Former prosthetic technician, retired air steward and artist Terry Hartill couldn’t hold back the tears as he was sent home from the Great British Bake Off last night.

And neither could viewers, who were in floods when Paul Hollywood had to make the tough decision to bring his competition to an end.

Following a botched signature bake, a lacklustre technical and a scruffy showstopper, it was Terry’s turn to exit, and as he did, he revealed that the show had helped him through losing his wife to illness last year.

“I said I wouldn’t get upset,” he said.

“It’s funny when you’re on your own… my wife and I were very happy and that was a massive loss.

“There wasn’t anything to fill the gap for a very long time so it’s given me a focus. I’ve met some lovely people I’m sure we’ll keep in touch for a very long time.

“It’s been a big help and something I’ll remember for a long time. I won’t stop baking. I’m very much looking forward to more projects carried out in a bigger time frame.”

And while 56-year-old Terry, who learned to bake from his grandmother, wasn’t the most polished of contestants on this year’s series, viewers loved him nonetheless.

And his tearful departure broke them.

Terry left the tent with Karen last night, in a double eviction, after Terry missed last week’s contest due to illness.

There are now seven bakers remaining to contest the 2018 Bake Off title.
