Tesco issues 'important' message to shoppers who buy blocks of butter

Tesco has issued an important message to shoppers who buy butter - as the supermarket explains how to store it. On its online grocery website, Tesco - the UK's biggest supermarket - has explained how to store its Salted Butter blocks.

Tesco, which is rivalled by Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Aldi and more, said: "Suitable for home freezing. Ideally freeze as soon as possible after purchase but always by 'use by' date shown. Defrost thoroughly for a minimum of 12 hours in the fridge. Once defrosted, do not refreeze."

But Tesco has different advice for tubs of Lurpak, Clover and more. In simple advice for spreadable butters, rather than blocks, Tesco says: "Keep refrigerated." In an online product description for its unsalted butter, Tesco says: "Unsalted butter. Minimum 82 per cent milk fat.

"100% British Milk Expertly churned for a smooth creamy taste." The advice comes after one person has taken to Reddit to ask for advice on storing butter and how to preserve it for as long as possible because they'd purchased many blocks of the foodstuff at once. They asked: "How do you store butter?"

In a viral post on the widely used web forum, the Redditor - who racked up dozens and dozens of responses from fellow users - went on: "I have bought a butter pack with 4 packs of butter. I just simply put all of them in the fridge. Is it the right thing to do?

"Also how long can butter store in the fridge.? I don't see there is an expiry date in the box. Thanks a lot everyone." In reply, a Redditor said: "Butter stays good in the fridge for a few months if kept around 4° (not in the door or a warm shelf). If you want butter be spreadable, keep one stick in a bowl in a cabinet".

Another said: "Some people leave it out on the table/counter and just covered to protect from bugs. I’m not one of those people. I buy the big blocks from Costco in a four-pack. Three go in the freezer until the one in the fridge has about 1/4 left and I move it to the fridge to thaw."
