Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda drivers warned not to let tank get 'near empty'

Fuel prices across the UK have hit an average 150.1p a litre, reaching the highest level since last November. Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury's drivers are scrambling to save by delaying petrol station visits until necessary.

But expert Gordon Wallis from Your NRG warns drivers on a supposed ‘fuel-saving tip’ that can actually cost you more in car repairs. He said: "Drivers should understand the importance of keeping their vehicles well-fuelled, especially as more people fill their tanks less often. Those aiming to lengthen the time between filling up might try to use nearly all their fuel, but this can damage your car and raise the chances of unnecessary breakdowns."

He added: "Driving with very little fuel in the tank can be tempting, but it's risky and can lead to costly repairs. Debris sucked into the fuel pump due to low fuel levels can result in repair costs ranging from £250 to £1,000, a significant financial burden for drivers."

He said: "Besides the potential repair costs, running out of fuel can have financial and legal implications. Fines for avoidable breakdowns due to fuel issues can amount to £100, with additional penalties of three points on the driver's licence. The penalties can be even more substantial in more severe cases involving accidents."

He continued: "Many drivers overlook that the fuel in their tank is a lubricant and insulation for the fuel pump. Running on low fuel levels, especially in stop-start traffic, can cause the fuel pump to overheat, potentially leading to engine overheating and further complications."

The motoring expert added: "A good habit for drivers is never letting their tank drop below a quarter full. This ensures they always have enough fuel to reach the next filling station, even during long journeys or in rural areas where stations may be scarce."

He went on: "While fluctuations in fuel prices can influence driving habits, it's important for drivers to prioritise the health and longevity of their vehicles. Despite recent decreases in fuel prices, the potential costs of repairs due to running on low fuel outweigh the short-term savings at the pump. To protect their vehicles, drivers must balance managing fuel costs and maintaining responsible fuel levels."
