Theresa May: 'Don't just listen to politicians'

British Prime Minister Theresa May sought to seal business support for her Brexit deal with the European Union on Monday.

In a speech to business lobby group the Confederation of British Industry, she urged people to listen not only to politicians, but also to businesses.

"Listen to what business that is providing your jobs, and ensuring that you have that income that puts food on the table for your family is saying," May said.

"And business is saying 'we want a good deal with EU and we want a good trading relationship with the European Union,'" May added.

May also said the Brexit implementation period should be over "before the next general election", - earlier than 2022 date suggested by EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier.

Barnier said the EU ministers "have agreed to the principle" of a one-off extension of the post-Brexit transition period if the two sides need more time to finalise a trade deal.

Under the divorce agreement, Britain agrees to be bound by EU rules during the transition, due to end in December 2020.
