Thermographic Footage Shows Cumbre Vieja Eruption After Cone Collapse

An inner cone of Spain’s Cumbre Vieja volcano collapsed on Tuesday, October 26, after earlier damage produced new lava flows across the island of La Palma.

This thermographic footage filmed by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute, shows lava shooting out of the mouth of the volcano on Tuesday night.

Lava flow from the volcano had covered more than 906 hectares (3.5 square miles) of the island and destroyed at least 2,162 buildings as of Monday, the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service said. Credit: Canary Islands Volcanology Institute via Storyful
