‘I think I’ve found the best – and surely the biggest – scones in Brid’
“What day is scone day?” someone asked Bridlington Spa Café on Facebook.
Turns out it’s every day at this seaside venue that is probably better known for the stars who appear here to entertain, rather than the consumables in its café. But what a show they put on with their cakes and bakes and, in particular, their scones.
These over-sized, oven-baked beasts have their own dedicated menu – the Daily Scones Special – with a change of flavour every 24 hours. With scones being my treat of choice whenever that snack-attack feeling strikes, I felt I had to go and sample what’s on offer when I happened to be through in Brid.

Headlining on that particular day was the Snickers scone. A day sooner and it would have been Cheese and Marmite; the day after was to be Sticky Toffee, and either of these I would be keen to sample next time they appear on the Spa café bill.
As it was, the Snicker special was all mine to try while my two companions were planning to share the simpler but no less large fruit scone that’s a Spa staple. They were the sensible ones, it turns out, because my scone, although delicious, was more than my appetite could manage.
The towering bake (it was taller than my cappuccino cup) was topped off with a piped swirl of buttercream, a large chunk of Snicker bar and drizzled with chocolate and toffee sauces. I cut it, with care, both to make it more manageable to eat and to see how it looked on the inside.
If there wasn’t already enough of a sweet hit on the outside, the innards (they had a nice, crumbly texture) were liberally dotted with chocolate chips. We had to ask for a paper bag to take away the remnants (there was no way I was leaving it) to enjoy later.
Before that, though, we were happy to sip our coffees and tea while drinking in the surrounding views. The café boasts panoramic windows from which you can take in the miles of sandy shore to the south, and the scenic harbour to the north and, of course, as far as the eye can see out to sea beyond Bridlington Bay.
I can’t see anyone wanting to finish up a snack or a meal in a hurry here. It’s a lovely spot for a leisurely sit.
The frontage of the Spa offers no hint at the spectacular elevated café that awaits at the back of the building. From the front entrance, you can walk straight through to where the busy café counter is located, with a selection of savoury as well as sweet specials on offer.
There appear to be plenty of staff on to serve and there were cheery smiles shared between them and friendly greetings for us on our visit, which made for a welcoming atmosphere. Incidentally, if you’re heading for Bridlington this weekend, and you fancy dropping in for a Spa scone, you’ll find it’s Biscoff on Saturday and Banoffee on Sunday. Enjoy!
