This Morning Viewers Fuming With Holly Willoughby And Phillip Schofield's 'Desperate' GBBO Announcement
Let’s be honest, all anybody has been talking about for the past 48 hours is The Great British Bake Off’s upcoming move from the BBC to Channel 4.
Yesterday evening the news broke that much-loved hosts of the show, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, won’t be fronting the programme once it switches channels, and it is understandable that everybody wanted to jump on the GBBO trend.
Still, fans were left fuming by a stunt pulled by This Morning earlier today, with hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield teasing viewers all morning to tune in at 10.30am for an exciting announcement about the new Bake Off hosts.
The official Twitter account also got in on the action, tweeting: “Who will be the new presenters of the GBBO? Official announcement on ‘This Morning’ at 10:30am.”
They followed up with: “Are @Schofe and @hollywills taking over from Mel & Sue? We reveal all at 10:30am only on #ThisMorning”.
However, when excited fans tuned in for the “official announcement”, they were left absolutely fuming to find that it was: “Official announcement! @hollywills and @Schofe rule themselves out of #GBBO presenting job… for now #ThisMorning”.
Erm, yeah… A little bit underwhelming.
Needless to say, it wasn’t long before viewers took to their own social media accounts to slam the move - dubbing it “bad taste" to try and "cash in" on the trending story:
@thismorning @hollywills @Schofe Oh. Hilarious. Nice attempt at getting extra viewers. This is why I won’t watch daytime telly.

#ThisMorning pretended to have a #GBBO announcement and I’m officially coining “viewbait”. You done goofed. https://t.co/1iRLkRFCpj

This Morning “Bake Off” announcement is a joke. They mocked up this and said they weren’t the new hosts. WHAT A JOKE pic.twitter.com/w8ab6ccyqv

They both look thrilled at whichever producer/editor thought up this segment. https://t.co/4B1lPtRHwz

Oh man… That This Morning Bake Off 'joke’ was not thought through, was it

Further to Phil and Holly’s announcement I can confirm that I will NOT be hosting Bake Off #GBBO

How dare Holly and Phil mess with people’s #gbbo emotions, I’m on the edge
— Emma Kelly (@TooManyEmmas) September 14, 2016
So @thismorning Official announcement was just to say that Holly & Phil weren’t doing it. Bad taste ITV! #GBBO

This Morning haven’t responded to the fierce backlash that it is enduring, but we have a feeling that they won’t be pulling a stunt like that again any time soon…
