Three-car crash near Sainsbury’s closes main Redditch road with air ambulance called

A three-car crash on a main road in Redditch has led to the air ambulance being called to the scene and the road being closed in both directions. The crash took place on the A441 Alvechurch Highway near to the roundabout by Sainsbury’s at around 2.30pm on Tuesday (April 23).

Emergency crews attended the scene with West Midlands Ambulance Service saying their were three people injured. A spokesman for the service said: “We were called to reports of a three-car road traffic collision on Bordesley Lane at 2.44pm.

"Four ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire attended the scene. On arrival we discovered three patients.”

Worcestershire County Council’s highways and travel department said the Alvechurch Highway was closed between Premier Inn and Abbey Crematorium. While West Mercia Police Tweeted: “Emergency services are currently at the scene a serious collision on Alvechurch Highway in Redditch.

“The collision happened at around 2.30pm near Abbey Trading Centre. We're advising drivers find an alternative route as the road expected to be closed for some time.”

Councillor Emma Marshall, who represents the Greenlands ward on Redditch Borough Council and saw the aftermath of the incident, posted on her Facebook post and said: “Please avoid Sainsbury's island for a while. There has been a three-car smash. Emergency services are in attendance and the Birmingham Road is completely closed. Motorists should avoid the Birmingham Road altogether."

Traffic information service, Inrix, said: “The A441 Alvechurch Highway in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to accident investigation work between Weights Lane and B4184 Middlehouse Lane. Congestion to surrounding routes including Windsor Road and Clive Road.” In an update short;ly after 6.30pm it said: “Traffic is coping well.”
