Three 'done deals' eyed before Newcastle United return for pre-season training in July

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is hoping to have three done deals at Benton in time for the start of pre-season training.

With Lloyd Kelly safely over the line following his free transfer from AFC Bournemouth, Howe should also have left-back Lewis Hall confirmed as a permanent deal with the completion of his arranged transfer from Chelsea set to go through at the start of next month, and in good time for the start of the Magpies' main bulk of summer work.

Newcastle are also keen to get at least one goalkeeper signed with talks for James Trafford ongoing and even the possibility of a squad man to help provide competition for Nick Pope and the rest of Howe's glove men. Howe is currently looking to get clarification on how badly he will need an additional striker with Callum Wilson's future still unclear as he enters the last year of his contract.

Wilson played down talk that he might leave at the end of the season but in the eyes of the money men at Newcastle the number 9 is deemed a player that could help the club gain a PSR win. It is accepted behind the scenes that a popular figure or longer-serving star could leave in the next few weeks as the club look to maintain good PSR health.

But Howe is still keen to add quality to his squad with a winger and a striker eyed in the summer trading period. Howe told Chronicle Live in a summer debrief last month: "It's very early days but it will be a long summer. We are working hard to get our targets identified and begin negotiations. There are a lot of unknowns in the market, we will see how things fall for us."

The lack of European football on the menu has affected Newcastle's spending powers slightly with the release of Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie an early indicator that the club must cut their cloth accordingly.
