Three pupils win prestigious translation awards as part of competition

Pupils from Bolton School have won prestigious translation awards.

A number of pupils in both the Boy’s Division and Girls’ Division have recently taken part in the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, a language translation competition organised by Queen’s College in Oxford.

As part of the competition the pupils had a go at translating language extracts at varying levels in French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish.

And from their hard work and determination, several pupils have been awarded.

Year 7 pupil Alistair Ashworth was awarded North West Winner in the Italian Beginners’ category.

Year 8 pupil Derek Leong was awarded North West Winner in the Mandarin Beginners category as well as National Runner-up.

Year 10 pupil Lily Coupe was awarded North West Winner in the Mandarin GCSE level category.

More than 16,000 students participated in the prize in the academic year and a spokesperson from the Queen’s College Translation Exchange said: “The standard of the translations submitted to the prize was very high and our team of judges was impressed by the creativity and fluency on display.”
