Thunderstorm warning for Glasgow on bank holiday Monday

Forecasters have warned that thunderstorms and flash floods could hit Glasgow and the west of Scotland on Monday.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather alert for an area stretching from Inveraray in the north to Stirling in the east and Dalbeattie in the south.

They say the slow-moving bands of bad weather could bring a danger of lightning strikes, flash flooding and possibly disruption to travel.

There is also a chance power cuts could occur while some services to businesses may be lost.

The weather warning begins at 1pm and lasts until 9pm at night.

The warning states: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

It adds: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

“There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.”

The capital Saarbruecken was badly affected while dykes were breached in several areas, causing power to fail or be shut down as a precaution.No deaths were reported but at least one person was injured.Chancellor Olaf Scholz, visiting a village in the affected area, said that "we can see here what violence nature can cause and how much we have to constantly prepare for such events".&nbsp;He praised the work of emergency services in helping local residents and promised help for those affected by the disaster.Saarland state premier Anke Rehlinger said that authorities still did not have a complete picture of the damage but it was expected to be "considerable".&nbsp;The heavy rains had eased early on Saturday, however, and a severe weather warning for the area was lifted.&nbsp;There was also flooding in the German states of Rheinland-Palatinate, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Hesse.About 850 workers from the federal relief agency were dispatched to Saarland to help tackle the floods, joining several thousand people in the state, many of them volunteers, the interior ministry said.&nbsp;Water rescue teams and extra fire-fighting units were sent in from other states, it said.&nbsp;- Worsening floods -Germany has faced worsening floods in recent years.&nbsp;In 2021, the regions of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia were hit by catastrophic floods that killed more than 180 people.In Belgium, the province of Liege was hit by severe flooding overnight into Saturday, with authorities receiving hundreds of requests for assistance and 150 firefighters deployed, governor Herve Jamar said.The main help provided by emergency services was pumping water out of flooded buildings, he said.&nbsp;In Les Fourons, northeast Belgium, the water was up to chest height in some houses, according to mayor Joris Gaens, quoted by Belga news agency.&nbsp;"These are the worst floods in the history of Les Fourons," he added.
