Plans for spy thriller The Night Manager's second series are being appropriately kept under wraps - so much so that even Tom Hiddleston isn't sure what he'll be doing yet!

Charles Cumming, one of those who adapted John le Carré's novel for telly, recently revealed that the not-yet-officially greenlit second series will definitely bring back "some" familiar characters, with Hiddleston's undercover agent Jonathan Pine among them.

Hiddleston was asked for an update during an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show this week, but admitted that he's been kept somewhat in the dark thus far.

"At the moment, it is in the lap of John Le Carré and his sons who run The Ink Factory, the production company which produces it," the actor explained.

Hiddleston then clarified that the writing team might be trying to put any new episodes into the context of real-world events.

"They are potentially conceiving how these characters might live on: what they’re doing now given the state of the world. Which is curious given that the world is in an ‘interesting’ place, shall we say," he hinted.

“What’s Jonathan Pine doing? Where is he? He’s probably in a dark corner somewhere spying on someone. What shape or form might that take? I’m very curious to see what materialises, and that’s about as much as I can say."

One of the team behind the Emmy-winning series who definitely won't be coming back is Susanne Bier, who is handing over directing duties because she isn't sure she could do her "very best work" on a second season.

The Night Manager airs on BBC One in the UK and AMC in the US.
