Williams: We want to sign characters

Swansea head coach Luke Williams says he wants to sign players with the right character this summer.

Williams is on record as saying the club need bolstering in every department, with particular emphasis on brining a striker to SA1.

He believes a potential signing's mindset and mentality will be just as important as their ability on the ball when he goes through his recruitment list with his team this summer.

“As we were talking about there, the individuals need to have the strongest character that we can find,” he said

“We need to see if we can do as much due diligence as we can on guys who are coming into the club so we know they have the strong mentality.

“Then, a group of players, a squad of players can develop that mentality between them.

“I think you need critical mass, I think you need just the right amount of guys in there who you know can lead and pull people with them. Then you create a group mentality, and that is very, very difficult to beat once you get to that point.”

No holiday for the boss

Meanwhile, Williams says he won't be taking a break this summer, despite the arduous nature of the Championship season.

Williams took the reins from Michael Duff, who was sacked in December, with the new man taking over in the new year. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

After a difficult start and a bumpy ride at times, there is optimism that under his stewardship Swansea could be a more competitive outfit next term.. He won't be recharging the batteries just yet, though.

“I don’t feel I quite deserve a holiday, so I am going to continue to work,” he said. “The work changes because I don’t have the guys out there on the grass, or in the type of meetings we would have every day, trying to get things in place to improve at the training ground and the processes we go through with training, conditioning and recovery.

“There is going to be some work going on to make sure we are in a good place, and plenty of work going on looking at potential targets coming to the club, and that’s probably the most time-consuming part at this point.

“But I think being present, first and foremost, and not missing an opportunity, not missing a moment…I am going to try and cover as many bases as possible over the summer so we can come back in the best place we can be.”

Duff has had time to reflect

Michael Duff says he’s had time to reflect after being let go by Swansea. Northern Irishman Duff was this week appointed the new Huddersfield Town boss after being out of work for the past six months.

He now takes charge of the Terriers as they look to bounce straight back to the Championship after being relegated to League One. As soon as he heard of their interest, he "jumped" at the chance, he admitted.

“As soon as discussions started with the club, I wanted to jump at the chance to be head coach of Huddersfield Town," he said.

“Since leaving my last role, I’ve had time to reflect, recharge and focus on what the next challenge I wanted to take on would look like. Whatever was to come had to be right and be a good fit, and that is exactly what this feels like. I know that our supporters expect a certain level of commitment, desire, high energy and passion from their play, and those are the high standards I’ve kept for all of my sides.

“My talks with the chairman Kevin Nagle, CEO Jake and sporting director Mark Cartwright have been incredibly positive, and I feel like we’ve been on the same page since day one. I know the club, the area and the fans from having crossed paths in the past, but now I want to get to know them properly from a place of belonging - and above all else, I want our supporters to have pride in their team again.

“This is a special club with a magnificent history and exciting future, so it’s a real honour to have the opportunity to be part of that. I can guarantee that I will give my all for Huddersfield Town - that’s what I’ll be asking of my players too - and together alongside our supporters we have a pre-season and campaign ahead that we’ll be ready to attack.”
