Williams: Striker needed and signings in every department

Swansea head coach Luke Williams says a striker will be on his shopping list this summer.

In news that won’t surprise supporters too much, Williams says he will be looking for signings in “every department” over the course of the off season.

Swansea face another summer of significant player turnover, with loan players departing and some of their out-of-contract stars set to move on.

In the final third of the pitch Swansea struggled last term, with Williams acknowledging they need more “natural finishers” in the ranks.

“I think there is a realistic possibility that there will be a new striker,” he told BBC Sport.

“We also need to bring in other players who have either proved they can score goals, or players we believe we have seen enough to suggest that if we put them in the right position, they will score.

“We definitely need more natural finishers, more guys with the instinct to finish actions off, because we are getting in there.”

Williams added that he knew how vast the challenge is this summer to get the necessary quality and quantity in the squad.

“Naturally there are gaps now in the squad that we need to fill and we need to fill those gaps as intelligently as we possibly can,” he added.

“We have lost a number of the squad so we are going to have to bring in at least one player in every department.”

Bony back in SA1

Former Swansea striker Wilfried Bony was back on his old stomping ground yesterday.

A Wales v England football match took place at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday, with stars from TV joined by Welsh and English sportsmen all turning out for charity.

It was raising funds for Welsh-based charity Joseph's Smile, as well as the Bradley Lowery Foundation. The Wales and England teams were managed by Chris Coleman and Sol Campbell respectively, with football stars Ashley Williams and Joe Ledley among those to don their boots once more.

Bony donned the red shirt of Wales for the day, which was a huge success.

"I've spent months just sat on my sofa emailing agents - I've messaged about 2,000," joked Katy Yeandle, who helped organise the event in memory of her son.

"The logistics of hosting a game has been bonkers. I've been up most nights until 4am or I'm up at 4am.

"I thought it'd be just two teams kicking a ball, but it has been all-consuming. I only just remembered on Wednesday that I need to get a football so they can play."

Duff Tykes job favourite

Michael Duff is now favourite for the vacant Barnsley job.

At the end of last month the former Swansea head coach's name was listed among the runners and riders for the position at Oakwell, but bookmakers have now installed him as the leading contender.

The Northern Irishman was in charge in Yorkshire before he left for south Wales.

Duff has been out of work since being dismissed by Swansea back in December. Earlier this year he opened up on his time in the Swansea.com Stadium dugout.

"Swansea, I went in, it didn't quite work," he said on Sky Sports back in April. "You learn so much from those negatives. Swansea's a brilliant club, fantastic people, passionate like you wouldn't believe about their team, because of where they are geographically. I really enjoyed it and it was a privilege to have managed them.

“But I’m sitting here for a reason. I’m definitely a better person and a better manager because of all of those experiences, it can’t always be good.”
