Tottenham today confirmed they will play their first home Champions League fixture at Wembley as they await the completion of their new £850million stadium.

Spurs are also in talks with UEFA about their other two group games, which could also be played at the national stadium.

The club confirmed last week that the planned opening of their new ground, against Liverpool on September 15, had been delayed, with no new date yet given for the first game there.

If Tottenham are drawn at home in the third round of the Carabao Cup, which takes place in the week starting September 24, they will seek special dispensation from the EFL either to reverse the fixture or to play it at a neutral venue, as Wembley is “unavailable”. That may involve compensation being paid to the other club involved.

Both the Champions League and Carabao Cup draws take place on August 30, with the first round of European matches on September 18 and 19. As reported by Standard Sport, UEFA are relaxed about allowing clubs to play their home games at more than one venue.

A Spurs statement read: “We have agreed with UEFA that the first home matchday of this season’s Champions League group stage, scheduled on either match day one (week commencing September 17) or match day two (week commencing October 1), will be staged at Wembley Stadium," read a Tottenham statement.

"Both match days are due to take place between our two Premier League home fixtures against Liverpool (Saturday 15 September) and Cardiff City (Saturday 6 October), which we confirmed last week had been switched to Wembley."
