An out-of-town hardware store in Herefordshire is set for a major makeover to become a discount household goods shop. The Homebase situated on the New Mills Industrial Estate, just west of Ledbury and established two decades ago, is earmarked for transformation into a Home Bargains, according to a recent planning submission by TJ Morris, the chain's parent company.

The planned overhaul includes a "comprehensive refurbishment" of the premises, which involves dismantling the existing front lobby, erecting a new storefront, adding perimeter fencing and gates, and reconfiguring the customer car park. The proposal also retains the garden centre section adjacent to the main building.

Additionally, the application seeks consent for an expanded product range beyond what is currently allowed at the premises. Home Bargains' extensive selection, described as "not possible to disaggregate", encompasses health and beauty items, medications, baby essentials, home products, toys and games, pet supplies, seasonal goods, food and beverages, and a limited array of clothing and shoes.

At the moment, the county hosts a single Home Bargains located on the Holmer Road estate in Hereford. However, the firm has ambitions to double its national presence to 1,200 stores.

The proposed new outlet in Ledbury is expected to offer "up to 100" full-time and part-time jobs, marking a "significant increase" from the current workforce at Homebase. The company also assures that their market analysis indicates the new store "will not lead to a significant adverse impact on the long-term vitality and viability of Ledbury town centre".

Public comments on the application can be submitted through the council's planning webpage until July 11. Any new main signage on the store will require approval through a separate application.
