CCTV images have been released after a train driver was spat at and punched after he confronted a gang of fare dodgers.

British Transport Police is investigating a report of an assault on a train driver, on board a train from Saltburn to Darlington. At around 9pm on Friday, June 7, the driver told a group of passengers to leave the train at Thornaby.

As one of the group left the carriage he spat in the face of the driver - before another punched him in the head. An appeal has now been launched and police have released CCTV images.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers believe the people in the images may have information that could help their investigation. Anyone who recognises them, or has any other information, is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 714 of 7 June."

Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
