Transformers 5: The Last Knight is lowest performing film in franchise yet

New Transformers film The Last Knight is on course to be the franchise's least successful film yet.

Variety reports that the fifth film in Michael Bay's Hasbro toy series took just $69.1 million (£54m) on over 4,000 screens since opening in the US last Wednesday (20 June). $15.6 million (£12.2m) of that was amassed on its opening day.

The first Transformers film was released a decade ago and Paramount has even more lined up - including a spin-off focused on character Bumblebee - despite the fact it seems fans are finally growing tired of the robots in disguise.

While critics have never favoured the franchise, The Last Knight - which stars Mark Wahlberg and Josh Duhamel - was particularly mauled with one writer branding it "the end of cinema."

Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman is continuing to do big business having officially earned the feat of becoming the highest-grossing film from a female director while comedy drama The Big Sick and Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled were treated to impressive opening weekends; the former Judd Apatow-produced film earned $87,000 (£68,000) having been shown on a mere five screens making it the best opening screen average for any film this year.
