Tributes placed at cordon as person dies after car ploughs into side of pub

A person has died after a car ploughed into the side of a pub in Heywood, the Manchester Evening News understands.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the incident on York Street at around 3.15am this morning (Monday). The M.E.N understands that a person tragically died after a car hit The White Lion pub and burst into flames.

Pictures taken earlier showed the pub building left badly damaged, with charring up the walls and bricks from the building left strewn across the road. A wrecked car could also be seen within the building.

Floral tributes have been left at the cordon on York Street this afternoon. No further details on the incident have been released by Greater Manchester Police at this stage.

The street remains taped off from Hartley Street to Green Lane. Fire crews have erected a screen outside the pub.

A number of emergency services vehicles remain stationed on the road. Officers have reportedly said the closure could be in place for much of today and 'potentially into tomorrow'.

In a statement issued earlier today, a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Shortly after 3.15am this morning (Monday, 1 July), four fire engines from Rochdale, Heywood and Bury fire stations attended a building fire on York Street, Heywood.

"Crews arrived quickly and used four hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. Road closures are in place and firefighters remain in attendance at this time."
