As we wait eagerly for season 3 of True Detective, keeping up our concerted effort to block out the entirety of season 2, we have some exciting casting news to keep that hope bubbling.

Scoot McNairy of Halt and Catch Fire star has been cast as a character called Tom, a father who suffers a terrible loss that will connect him to the decades-long investigations of two state-police detectives.

The new season will centre on a macabre mystery that continues over the course of three different time periods in an Ozarks community, growing more bizarre as the years pass.

Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is playing Wayne Hays, while Stephen Dorff is Roland West, both Arkansas state officers who've had their lives and careers moulded by the central mystery.

Fantastic Beasts' Carmen Ejogo has also been cast as schoolteacher Amelia Reardon, who helps Wayne in investigating the disappearance of two children in the '80s.

One actor we won't be seeing is Woody Harrelson, who's said there's no chance of a return for him.

"Because it went very well the first time and if we come back around to it, what else are you going to hear but, 'Not as good! Just wasn't as good. Boy, you guys were good before, but this time…' I don't want to even hear that," he explained.

In contrast, Matthew McConaughey has said that he'd be keen to come back, insisting that he "wouldn't hesitate for a second" – although that seems pretty unlikely too.

Showrunner Nic Pizzolatto is collaborating on this latest True Detective story with Deadwood writer David Milch. There's no exact date yet for season 3, but it won't be this year we're afraid – HBO programming president Casey Bloys has confirmed that True Detective will return in 2019.
