Two teenage boys - both aged 14 - have been arrested after a 65-year-old man attacked at Stockport Interchange was left critically injured.

The boys are both being held on suspicion of assault and remain in custody for questioning, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement on Thursday.

In the update, the force said the man remained in hospital fighting for his life. He hasn't been named.

The Manchester Evening News told how the 'sickening attack' was reported at around 9.45pm on Tuesday night, when officers arrived at the newly-opened interchange and found the man seriously injured. He was rushed to hospital from the scene in a critical condition.

Detectives referenced a 'sickening attack' and called the man 'defenceless'.

In Thursday's statement, police said: "Two teenagers have been arrested following an investigation into a serious assault at Stockport Interchange. A 65-year-old man is still in a critical condition in hospital following the incident at around 9.45pm on Tuesday 23 April 2024.

"Officers have now arrested two 14-year-old boys on suspicion of assault and they remain in custody for questioning."

Detective Inspector Shifa Chowdhury said: "This was an horrific attack that has left the victim in hospital with serious injuries. Our enquiries have been swift since the incident including an extensive review of CCTV to identify and trace those we believe responsible.

"We'd also like to thank members of our community who have been in touch following our appeal with vital pieces of evidence. Making Stockport a place where people feel safe is a priority and working together we will protect this important space.

No further details have been revealed and the boys haven't been named.
