Two tennis players test positive for coronavirus after playing in Djokovic's 'bone-headed' tournament

Grigor Dimitrov has become the latest tennis player to test positive for coronavirus after competing on the Adria Tour.

The competition is a series of events hosted by world number one Novak Djokovic. The opening round was played in Djokovic’s home country, Serbia, with this second leg in Zadar, Croatia, over the weekend.

Australian player Nick Kyrgios – who was not playing in the tournament – called the decision to hold the event “bone-headed”.

He added: “Speedy recovery fellas, but that's what happens when you disregard all protocols. This is not a joke."

Lockdown measures were eased in Croatia before the event and players were not asked to social distance, although fans attending matches were.

Dimitrov withdrew from the tournament on Saturday when he felt sick. His opponent that day, Borna Coric, has also since tested positive for the virus.

On his positive test, Dimitrov said: "I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused. I tested positive back in Monaco for Covid-19. I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during these past days gets tested and takes the necessary precautions.

"I am back home now and recovering. Thanks for your support and please stay safe and healthy."

Both players played basketball in their spare time with Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Marin Cilic, posting videos to social media, as well as being filmed together in a nightclub.

Sunday’s final, which would have featured Djokovic, has been cancelled.

Coric has come into contact with at least 10 other players during the tournament.

The Adria Tour released a statement on Sunday, claiming it followed all safety measures.

It said: "As a precaution and to protect the health of all participants and visitors, the organisers of Adria Team have decided to cancel the grand finale of the tennis spectacle planned for tonight.

"At all times we have strictly followed the epidemiological measures in place with the countries where the Adria Tour was organised.

“None of the people involved in the organisation and who have been in contact with Grigor have any symptoms.

“However, we are in close contact with health authorities to insure that all people who were in contact with Grigor Dimitrov will be tested tonight."

The tour was set up by Djokovic as a charity event across former Yugoslavia, with normal tournaments having ben cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The remaining legs were due to be played in Montenegro on 27 and 28 June and Bania Luka, Bosnia, on 3 and 4 July. The Montenegro leg has been cancelled, with the Bosnian leg expected to follow suit.
