UK will be hotter than Corfu in heatwave as 'hottest day of year' looms

The UK will be hotter than CORFU this week - with Britain braced for 24C highs as it sizzles warmer than parts of Greece. The hottest day of the year is likely on Wednesday, with 24C.1C highs from earlier this year blitzed by the sun.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “It’s a rare combination for the UK of late – but high pressure and warmth is on the way.” The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It’s a big change, with around 23C shown on forecast models.”

A Met Office forecaster said ahead of the new week: “Some very warm days are possible. There’s a strong signal for high pressure across the UK, bringing a good deal of fine and dry weather for most, continuing through the weekend.”

Looking at today (Tuesday May 7), the BBC Weather team said: "Sunny spells developing for most today. A few lingering spells of rain in the morning and showers in the afternoon in western areas, but lighter than yesterday. Drier and brighter elsewhere."

And giving its update on Tuesday evening, the Beeb went on: "Becoming dry and settle tonight with be variable cloud amounts of cloud and some clear spells. The chance of fog and mist; particularly for the south-west. A mild night for most with light winds."

In an outlook for Wednesday, it added: "Turning settled for most tomorrow as high-pressure builds. Become warm in the south, but cloudier and breezy towards the far north and west of Scotland with persistent rain moving in from the evening."

Its outlook for Thursday to Saturday adds: "On Thursday, the south will see patchy cloud, sunny spells and a few afternoon showers. Cloudy to the north with spells of rain moving in from the west, but turning drier later in the day. Hazy sunshine to the south on Friday but cloudy and wet to the far north. Saturday looks settled with hazy sunshine for most and just a few isolated afternoon showers developing in places."
