UK set for 'official' heatwave with temperatures 'hotter than Portugal and Tenerife'

The UK is set to roast hotter than the Algarve with temperatures to reach 27C in a near-heatwave. UK temperatures are set to skyrocket to stifling levels with a sizzling level of mercury on the thermometer, and places like London forecast to be warmer than Portugal.

BBC Weather says capital city London will bask in hot sunshine throughout the week and it will be hotter than Faro, in the south of Portugal, as well as Barcelona in Spain. The weather conditions will be similar to those in Ibiza, with 27C heat expected on Wednesday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris said: “In stark contrast to the first half of June, where temperatures have widely been below average, we are expecting to see a steady uptick through the second half of this week, rising to around or above average, and it will likely feel very warm for those in the sunshine.”

London could also be hotter than Tenerife and the south of France. Netweather TV says of June 24 to June 30: "Temperatures will rise above average for the time of year, and it is forecast to become hot in most parts of England, with the potential for maximum temperatures to exceed 30C for a time in the southeast.

"However, it looks unlikely that much of the extreme heat over North Africa will get as far north as the British Isles." It went on: "Confidence is relatively low regarding how long the ridge of high pressure will hold on.

"Still, it seems probable that the Atlantic trough will move eastwards towards the end of the week, resulting in the weather turning cooler and more unsettled from the west, potentially sparking a thundery breakdown as low pressure systems and fronts collide with the hot continental air."

"Turning hot for a time in late June, more unsettled for a time in early July," its forecast title reads.
