Wet and windy weather is to replace snowfall after northern parts of Britain were coated in white today.

As the UK was gripped by frosty temperatures overnight, ice covered roads and snow descended.

Tulloch Bridge in Scotland saw the heaviest snowfall, with a 15cm coating today.

The adverse weather caused travel chaos, with the M47 closed for a time overnight and drivers warned of the conditions.

However, temperatures are set to get milder as the week progresses - though wet and windy weather is to come in.

Nicola Maxey, a Met Office forecaster, told the Standard: "It's an improving picture going forward, moving away from colder weather into wet and windy the rest of the week."

Temperatures are due to increase, with today sitting at around 7C to 8C in London, then around 10C in the capital tomorrow.

By Friday, London could see temperatures of 14C while even more northern parts of Scotland, blighted with the worst of the cold, will be at around 11C.

There could be some more snow later today though Ms Maxey said this is likely to be confined to the north and on higher ground.

Weather warnings for ice and snow which had been in place ended at 11am today.
