Russian Federal Tax system paralyzed: Ukrainian cyber operation confirmed

Cyber experts from the Ukrainian military’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) have successfully attacked the Russian Federal Tax System and the IT company Office.ed-it.ru. The “paralysis” in the operation of the Russian system will persist for at least a month, with full recovery impossible, the HUR stated on Dec. 12.

The operation took place a few days ago. Military intelligence operatives infiltrated the central server of the tax system and over 2,300 of its regional servers throughout Russia and occupied Crimea.

The servers were infected with malware, and both the main database and its backup copies were completely destroyed, the HUR said.

The HUR previously reported a successful cyber operation related to Rosaviatsiya, which resulted in obtaining a significant volume of classified documents, on Nov. 23.

Earlier on Dec. 12, news broke about a massive cyber attack on Kyivstar. Ukraine’s SBU Security Service opened a criminal investigation, suspecting the involvement of the Russian intelligence services.

Kyivstar’s Director, Oleksandr Komarov, stated that the definitive timeline for restoring communication remains unclear.
