Consumer champions Which? have reported that Aldi was the cheapest UK supermarket to get your groceries from in April.

The watchdog compares the cost of groceries every month at Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose to determine the most affordable grocer. According to the latest results, the budget chain is once again the winner - but Lidl isn't far behind.

In April, the cheapest supermarket for a shopping list of 67 items was Aldi, where the total bill averaged £112.90 across the month. In contrast, an identical shop at Lidl came to an average of £115.23, making it just a £2.33 difference between the two rivals.

Waitrose was the priciest supermarket in April, with a total of £144.13 - a difference of £31.23 compared to Aldi, or 28 percent more. The list of 67 items included both branded and own-brand items, such as Birds Eye Garden Peas, Heinz baked beans, Hovis bread, milk and butter.

The analysis took into account special offer prices but not multi-buys or two-tier loyalty prices, which are only available to loyalty scheme members. Shoppers are encouraged to always compare prices online using websites like Trolley.co.uk to ensure they're getting the best in-store prices, reports the Mirror.

Other money-saving tips include swapping pricier branded goods for cheaper supermarket-own labels, avoiding local convenience stores if possible - as these are always more expensive than larger shops - and searching Google for voucher codes and discounts.

Which? Retail Editor, Ele Clark, said: "Our latest research shows that Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in April, with Lidl following closely behind once again. As food costs continue to weigh heavily on household finances, it's unsurprising many people are opting to shop at discounters to save money, especially as shoppers could stand to make significant savings."
