The 'unforgettable' zoo where you can can tickle a tapir and feed a big cat that's just a short drive from Essex

Just outside of Essex, near Cheshunt, is one of the best zoos I have ever been to due to the conservation work it carries out in addition to the volume of activities there are for all ages. Hertfordshire Zoo - which used to be called Paradise Wildlife Park - is a registered charity, and all funds raised at the zoo is used to care for the animals and support UK and abroad conservation projects.

It is so clear that the animals are brilliantly loved and cared for. Hertfordshire Zoo prides itself on creating the best possible environments for the 500+ animals that call HZ home, while providing brilliant entertainment for visitors.

The range of animals at the zoo was outstanding, with the reptiles (including a HUGE green anaconda and a dwarf crocodile), birds, farm animals, sunbears, red pandas and penguins holding a special place in my heart.

The stand-out feature of the zoo for me was the range of animal experiences that it hosts. These experiences are very safe, educational and allow visitors to establish special bonds with some of the animals. You can meet and feed capybaras, tickle a tapir, pet a sloth, feed a big cat or encounter a wolf. For any animal lover, these experiences would make an unforgettable day out.

The Zoo also hosts educational talks throughout the day where you can learn more about specific animals. The dedicated team of Animal Keepers, who are more than happy to share their knowledge of the animals they care for, were great when I attended the camel talk, which is completely free to watch.

Another great feature of Hertfordshire Zoo is its wide range of eateries which are scattered around the site, meaning refreshment is never too far away. The Bamboo Kitchen was my favourite during my visit, which is the zoo’s Asian cuisine restaurant right in the heart of the Land of the Tigers. The set up means you can come eye-to-eye with the Amur tigers whilst enjoying a delicious chicken chow mein!

While the animal experiences may be aimed at older children and adults (like myself) there is plenty to do for the little ones. There is a paddle beach during the summer, a jungle themed soft play area and safari adventure golf.

It also hosts a variety of activities outside of Zoo opening hours, such as Summer Evenings at the Zoo- an exclusive after-hours event promising an unforgettable experience, whilst having exclusive access to watch the animals as the sun sets in Hertfordshire which is happening every Saturday in June. HZ hosts a ‘Dine for Wildlife’ Charity Fundraising Ball annually, with the next one taking place on July 6.

The zoo was quite expensive to attend, with adult tickets costing £26. However, knowing how much there is to do at the zoo and that the ticket costs goes towards the care of the animals, it is definitely worth it for a brilliant day out!
