Summer is finally set to arrive in the UK as the remnants of a scorching heatwave in the US is pushed over the British isle. While the UK won't see temperatures nearly as warm as those being experienced in the US and Canada, it is expected to be much warmer than the chilly start to June.

While it will feel warmer, generally the Welsh forecast will be unsettled, with lots of cloud and the odd shower. Nevertheless, in parts of the country we will see highs of 23°C which is around 10°C hotter than at the start of the month. This week, Sunday looks set to be the warmest day for a while, although it will continue into next week.

As the jet stream moves northwards this will allow for the high pressure to move inwards and over the UK allowing for higher temperatures. Whether the UK will see a heatwave is currently uncertain. The Met Office defines an official heatwave as at least three days where the temperature exceeds a defined temperature threshold.

Speaking of the upcoming warmer weather, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: “In stark contrast to the first half of June, where temperatures have widely been below average, we are expecting to see a steady uptick through the second half of this week, rising to around or above average, and it will likely feel very warm for those in the sunshine.

“This initial spell of warm conditions isn’t expected to last too long however, as it turns more changeable through Friday and into the weekend with areas of cloud and rain spilling east across the UK.”

And BBC forecaster Matt Taylor agreed with the difference coming from the jet stream moving northwards "drawing in something a little but warmer and high pressure which through the second half of the weekend and beyond will mean drier and warmer weather more widely". The upcoming Met Office for Wales

Thursday, June 20:

"Any early mist and fog patches will soon clear to leave a fine and dry day, with good spells of sunshine. Light winds and feeling warm in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 23 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

"Mainly dry on Friday, although turning breezier perhaps with some rain in the west later, and elsewhere overnight. A few showers early Saturday, then fine and dry. Fine on Sunday."

The UK long rage forecast

Monday June 24 - Wednesday, July 3

"Predominantly fine and settled through the period and for much of the country turning much warmer than we have seen in recent weeks. At first some thicker cloud could bring some outbreaks of mostly light rain, this mainly affecting northwestern areas. However for most it will be dry throughout, and likely to turn increasingly warm as we move into next week.

"There is a chance that this could persist for much of the rest of the period, turning increasingly hot, however by the latter part of next week we see a large range of outcomes, some of which allow for a return of temperatures closer to average. However the trend toward much warmer conditions continuing through next week is preferred."
