Hammer Attack Suspect in Critical Condition After NYPD Shooting

New York police officers shot a suspect on May 13 who has been linked to hammer attacks in Manhattan. New York police said in a press release the suspect swung a hammer at police officers before the shooting. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he is in critical condition.

Officers Geraldo Casaigne and Lauren O’Rourke were in the vicinity of 8th Avenue and 37th Street around 10am eastern time when they spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect in four hammer attacks that happened on May 11.

After the suspect swung the hammer, O’Rourke fell to the ground before Casaigne discharged his weapon four times, striking the suspect twice, once in the right arm and once in the torso. O’Rourke sustained abrasions and lacerations to the back of her head and back, Casaigne was treated for tinnitus. Both were taken to Bellevue Hospital, were treated and were released.
