Mauritians Blame Government as Severe Flooding Damages Homes

Residents of northern Mauritius, a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, have criticized the government for lack of preparedness after torrential rain on February 9 and 10 brought damaging flooding to the area, with more than 200mm (7.87 inches) of rain reported in some parts.

This footage shows the flood-prone village of Petite Julie, which lies close to a major reservoir in north-central Mauritius. Nina Sawetz, who shot this footage, says the government has failed to build adequate flood defenses in the area, and that residents are seeking help through crowdfunding.
