Montreal Students Respond to Police Arrests With Sit-in

Students at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) staged a sit-in on the main floor of the university building on Wednesday, April 8, after police arrested over 20 of their peers earlier in the day. Students have been protesting austerity measures resulting from the provincial government’s tabled budget.

Police had been called over disruptions at the college, with reports of some students bursting into classes, demanding that others join their protest.

The arrested were released at night but will be facing charges, including unlawful assembly. This video shows the sit-in following the arrests. According to reports, the action led to an occupation of the university building later that evening with police once again called to the college. Credit: Facebook/ W services Marketing / Graphisme
